Vice President Kamala Harris goofed when she tried to dish out some history lessons on basketball and falsely claimed that the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament was not allowed to have brackets until a few years ago.

In a recent interview with Spectrum News at a clean energy event, the vice president claimed that it was not until 2022 that the women’s teams were allowed to have brackets.

“Okay, a bit of a history lesson, do you know that women were not, the women’s teams were not allowed to have brackets until 2022,” she stated, adding, “Think about that, and what that, talk about progress, you know, better late than never, but progress.”

Making a case that including the women’s team in March Madness, which exclusively belonged to the NCAA men’s tournament till 2022, is a major step forward in sports for women, she stated, “Even just now, allowing the women to have brackets and what that does to encourage people to talk more about the women’s teams, to watch them. Now, they’re being covered, you know, and, and, this is the reality.”

“People used to say, ‘Ah, women’s sports, who’s interested?’ Well, if you can’t see it, you won’t be, but, when you see it, you realize, ‘Oh, we’re talking about star athletes who are incredibly gifted … It’s nice we are finally giving women in sports that kind of platform. I find it so exciting,’” she added.

Harris, who puts herself forward as an avid sports fan, could not be more wrong with her claim about the introduction of brackets in women’s NCAA tournament. In fact, brackets have been used in Women’s NCAA since the first Division I Women’s Tournament in 1982.

It did not take long for X users to spot the error in Harris’ claims.

“NCAA women’s basketball has used “brackets” since its inaugural tournament in 1982. HIGHLY embarrassing for Kamala!” the research account for the Republican National Committee wrote.

“What the hell is she talking about? Obama filled out a women’s bracket every year of his presidency, starting in 2009,” Guy Benson wrote.

“This woman is one seat away from being the President. Let that sink in,” another user tweeted.

X users also dug up posts of her filling out a women’s bracket in 2021.

Defenders of Harris have claimed that she misspoke and had intended to say that the women’s tournament was adopted into March Madness in 2022.
