Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher said that Americans are “living with their head in the toilet” for having a generally low approval of President Joe Biden’s performance.

During his monologue on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday night, Maher tried to invalidate Americans’ economic reality, saying that “wages are rising, unemployment is negligible, the stock market is soaring, we somehow brushed off both the Trump presidency and the pandemic.”

Maher, who earns around $10 million annually from HBO, admitted that American families are hurt by inflation. However, he suggested that families should be consoled by things like the low price of television sets, next-day shipping and even pizza.

“You’ve got next-day shipping, stuffed-crust pizza, legal weed, GPS, and porn on your phone. Cheer the f*** up. Stop acting like life in America in 2024 is unbearable. Biden’s ratings are in the toilet not because he’s doing a bad job, but because many Americans like living with their head in the toilet,” he said.

Maher went on to suggest that complaints about the state of the country under Biden are a catalyst for depression and anxiety, which has risen across the country in recent years.

According to him, while “depression is of course a very real thing … earlier generations never suffered from the expectation that you’re supposed to feel good all the time.”

Maher’s remarks sparked a wave of backlash on social media, as

“Sounds like Bill is doing ok cause everyone can buy a cheap tv to watch him!” Karen Cook wrote.

“There is no excuse for Bill Maher to simp for establishment politics considering how much exposure he has to heterodox opinions. The failure to align his purported values to actual policies is pathetic,” another user wrote.

A third user pointed out the true situation of things, saying, “Things are great for people making $10 million a year, I agree. The stockmarket and GDP are great! Meanwhile, people who spend their money on essentials are drowning in debt and taking on extra part-time jobs. The economy REALLY DOES suck for most of us. Groceries alone are twice what they cost in 2019.

Western Journal reporter Michael Austin also weighed in, saying, “You can get a tv for $60 so don’t worry about your skyrocketing rent and grocery bill L O L.”

According to the RealClearPolitics average, Biden’s approval rating has reduced by over 15 percentage points, with his disapproval numbers reaching almost 60% in some recent polls.
