Former President Donald Trump has filed an appeal to New York state’s mid-level appeals court in hopes to get his civil fraud ruling overturned.

Judge Arthur Engoron earlier this month ruled that Trump was liable in the civil fraud case brought against him by New York Attorney General Letitia James and ordered him to pay over $350 million in fines.

Engoron also barred the GOP presidential candidate from doing business in New York for three years and barred his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump from doing business in the state for two years. The two were also fined over $4 million each.

The New York judge had agreed with James who accused Trump of presenting misleading financial statements in order to get favorable loans. Trump’s defense team, however, argued that there was nothing wrong with the financial evaluations. They also highlighted that all of the loans were repaid and there were no victims of the alleged financial fraud.

In their appeal, Trump’s attorneys accused Engoron of committing errors of law and/or fact and abusing his discretion.

“We trust that the Appellate Division will overturn this egregious fine and take the necessary steps to restore the public faith in New York’s legal system,” Trump attorney Alina Habba stated.

The appeal comes about four days after Engoron denied a request from Trump’s team to postpone the formalization and enforcement of the judgment.

After Engoron’s ruling on Feb. 16, Trump said he would be appealing the ruling which he decried as a political “witch hunt” and “election interference.”

“We will be appealing. But more important than that, this is Russia, this is China. This is the same game. It all comes out of the DOJ. It all comes out of Biden. It’s a witch hunt against his political opponent, the likes of which our country has never seen before,” he said to reporters outside his Mar-a-Lago home.

His lawyer Alina Habba also criticized the judge’s decision and the trial altogether in

“I think the biggest message I can give the American people tonight is that he’s not going to get away with it. Letitia James is not going to get away with it; the Biden administration is not going to get away with it,” she stated.

Insisting that Trump did not do anything wrong, she added, “All he has done is win a campaign, and that is scaring them because they know when he goes back in November 2024 he is going to clean house, and that is truly the problem. It’s not about Mar-a-Lago’s worth.”
