At a campaign rally in Tucson, Arizona, on Thursday, former U.S. President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, revealed a new tax policy proposal aimed at eliminating taxes on overtime pay if he is elected in November.

Speaking to supporters at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, Trump explained that his plan would serve as an incentive for employees while also helping companies find workers. “As part of our additional tax cuts we will end all taxes on overtime,” Trump announced.

Trump emphasized the potential impact of the proposal, stating, “It’s time for the working man and woman to finally catch a break. I think it’s going to be great for the country. So that’s why we will be saying that if you’re an overtime worker when you’re past 40 hours a week, think of that, your overtime hours will be tax-free.”

He further highlighted the importance of workers who put in overtime, saying, “The people who work overtime are among the hardest working citizens in our country and for too long no one in Washington has been looking out for them. Those are the people, really work. They are police officers, nurses, factory workers, construction workers, truck drivers, and machine operators.”

Joseph Costello, a spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, dismissed Trump’s plan as a “snake oil sales pitch.” He added, “No matter how much he lies now, Donald Trump’s record and agenda are clear — as president, he stole millions of dollars of wages from the workers he purports to represent.”

This proposal follows Trump’s earlier announcement in June to end taxes on tips for all service workers, which Harris later supported with a similar stance in August.

During the Arizona rally, Trump also criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s approach to illegal immigration. “I’m angry at Venezuelan gangs taking over Aurora, Colorado,” he said, “And illegal Haitian migrants taking over a beautiful place — Springfield, Ohio. I’m angry about young American girls being raped and sodomized and murdered by savage, criminal aliens.”

Arizona, heavily affected by illegal immigration, is viewed as a critical battleground state for the 2024 election. Current polling indicates that Trump holds an average 1.6-point lead over Harris in the state.
