The state of Islamic Republic, known as the biggest international sponsor for terrorism, has hacked into Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign.
This time last month, Politico started receiving insider promos from an anonymous AOL email account using the moniker “Robert” on behalf of its campaign themes. It also included internal emails from a top Trump campaign official, including research on Senator JD Vance (R-OH) and leap spots that he might have.
When the publication asked the anonymous account how they received the documents, they responded: “I suggest you don’t be curious about where I got them from. Any answer to this question, will compromise me and also legally restricts you from publishing them.”
Earlier this week, Microsoft released a report saying that Iran was interfering in U.S. election activity — mainly targeting swing states — through online efforts designed to work voters up or down the polls for specific candidates on behalf of their government sponsors.
Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), designated as a terrorist organization, had sent in June ”’per report”’ an imitated spear phishing email to high hierarchical presidential campaign officials from the affected mailing account of a former senior advisor.
A senior Trump Campaign official confirmed on Saturday that the campaign had been targeted in a hacking attack and blamed Iran, although Microsoft did not say which group or U.S. account they were looking at specifically.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said the “illegal documents” were stolen from “foreign enemies of America,” with an eye toward influencing the 2024 election and generally wreaking havoc on all our democratic processes.
“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Cheung continued. “On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a ‘high ranking official’ on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee.”
“The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House,” he added.
Senator Vance has also made clear that we must address Iran’s many activities across the Middle East and beyond. Last month, he told Fox News: “A lot of people recognize that we need to do something with Iran—but not these weak little bombing runs. If you’re going to punch the Iranians, you punch them hard.”
The hack also comes as recent reports indicate Iran is trying to meddle in the upcoming presidential election against President Trump. A U.S. intelligence report released in late August said that Iran was actively working to hurt the Trump Campaign.
