At the 2025 Academy Awards, actress Demi Moore showcased a subtle yet telling reaction upon losing the best actress award to rising star Mikey Madison.

A lip reading expert consulted by the Daily Mail, Nicola Hickling, observed Moore’s response, noting that the “Substance” actress muttered “nice” without a smile, appearing to force the acknowledgment through what seemed like reluctant body language.

Footage shared on social media platform X captured Moore, 62, displaying visible disappointment, with noticeable tension in her jaw as Madison’s name was announced instead of her own.

The competitive category included other notable performances from Fernanda Torres in “I’m Still Here,” Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez,” and Cynthia Erivo in “Wicked.”

In her acceptance speech, a visibly moved Madison expressed her astonishment at the win. “This is very surreal. I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today, is really incredible.”

The 25-year-old actress then acknowledged the film’s creative team before addressing an important aspect of her role: “I just want to recognize and honor the sex worker community. Yes, I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this incredible experience.”

Madison also paid tribute to her fellow nominees, stating, “I also just want to recognize the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honored to be recognized alongside all of you. This is a dream come true. I’m probably going to wake up tomorrow.”

“Anora,” which portrays the story of a sex worker who weds a Russian oligarch’s son, dominated the 97th Academy Awards. The film secured best picture against strong contenders including “The Brutalist,” “Wicked,” “Conclave,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys” and “The Substance.”

The film’s success extended to other categories, with director Sean Baker winning for best original screenplay, film editing, and direction. Moore’s film “The Substance” didn’t leave empty-handed, securing the award for best makeup and hairstyling.

Despite missing out on the Oscar, Moore’s performance in “The Substance” had already garnered significant recognition, including her first Golden Globe for best actress, along with wins at the Critics Choice Awards and Satellite Awards.
