This incident follows recent DPS surveillance operations, including drone monitoring of individuals crossing the Rio Grande by raft. Such enforcement actions are part of Operation Lone Star, initiated by Governor Greg Abbott in 2021, which has proven effective in combating illegal border crossings and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.
