In a move that would further thin the already slim Republican majority in the House, Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) announced that he will be resigning from Congress at the end of Friday, March 22.

In a press release shared on X on Tuesday, Buck wrote, “It has been an honor to serve the people of Colorado’s 4th District in Congress for the past 9 years. I want to thank them for their support and encouragement throughout the years.”

“Today, I am announcing that I will depart Congress at the end of next week. I look forward to staying involved in our political process, as well as spending more time in Colorado with my family,” he added.

There is a next to impossible chance of getting Buck to change his mind, as he told reporters that “this place just keeps going downhill and I don’t need to spend my time here.”

“Mike Johnson’s ability to talk me into staying here is going to be about as successful as his ability into talking me into unconstitutional impeachments,” he added, per NBC News.

By “unconstitutional impeachments,” Buck was referring to the Republican effort to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his failure to comply with immigration laws at the southern border. Buck was one of the three House Republicans who voted against the resolution.

Buck’s announcement on Monday saw him move up his initial exit date, as he revealed in November that he would not be seeking reelection this year and would be leaving Congress when his two-year term ends in January, 2025.

Buck, who has represented Colorado’s 4th Congressional District since 2015, might be replaced by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who represents Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District but wants to run for the state’s 4th Congressional District later this year.

Her bid is supported by former President Donald Trump, who said earlier this month that she “has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District!”

“Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is a Proven Conservative and Effective Leader who delivers for Colorado, and our America First agenda. She has led the fight to Impeach Joe Biden, Stop Illegal Immigration, Defend the Second Amendment, Protect our Wonderful Ranchers and Farmers, Support our Military and Veterans, Secure our Natural Resources to Pursue Energy Dominance, and Stand Up to the Radical Democrats who want to Destroy our Beautiful Country,” he added.

In response, Boebert tweeted, “It’s my honor to have the endorsement of the greatest President our country has ever known – Donald J. Trump.”
