At a virtual campaign rally on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris joined Oprah Winfrey and stunned her audience by declaring she was willing to kill her other small self.

Harris said with a laugh during the “Unite for America Rally,” a livestream event hosted by Winfrey: “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot.” The event included citizens asking questions, and appearances being made by different celebrities.

Noting how startled she was by Harris’ disclosure that she owns a gun, Winfrey added, “I did not know that. That’s pretty potent stuff.”

The discussion then turned to gun violence, with Harris reaffirming her belief. She followed that with a too-familiar refrain for politicians thrust onto the national stage: ”If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot, sorry,” she said, then immediately: ”Probably should not have said that.” The audience laughed.

More than 140 grassroots organizations took part in the rally, which was organized by the group Win with Black Women to support Harris. About 400 people attended the event in Oakland County, Michigan, where the A-listers made appearances in person.

Harris’s comments about “kneecapping” an intruder triggered a similar social media frenzy. Other users knocked the vice president for her election campaign embracement of gun control measures. “Let’s be very clear. This is a woman who has time and again called to disarm you — yes, seriously she will 100% take your guns away if given the chance. Your Security but not mine.

The Spectator editor Stephen Miller also reminded us that this was the same Kamala Harris who thought mandatory gun buyback programs were a good idea. “Or any journalist with even a shred of professional reputation,” Miller added.

Radio host Larry Eldern, as well as writer turned columnist Derek Hunter also threw shade at Harris for her comment. Hunter said: “They’d have the Secret Service shooting them because she has protection 24/7. She wants to screw you and your family out of protection.

This, of course, has led to a revisitation of Harris on guns and her 2007 quote as San Francisco’s district attorney. She said at the time, “Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible and safe.”

But Harris tried to brush off the criticism during Tuesday’s presidential debate by noting that both she and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are gun owners as well and “we are literally not about taking firearms from anyone.” She later added, “Enough with lying at every turn about this stuff.

Other speakers and entertainment figures joined the rally to talk about the 2024 election, but Harris’ remarks on home defense lingered in everyone’s mind of the night.
