An 89-year-old survivor of a communist concentration camp who also spent years in the forced-labor factories that dotted Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe could get up to more than a decade behind bars should she be convicted this week on federal criminal conspiracy charges related to pro-life protests at two abortion facilities in Michigan.
In February 2023, the Biden administration charged Edl with conspiring to deprive clients of an abortion clinic from their constitutional rights. The indictment was consistent with WIR’s long history. She was one of several protesters, who took part in peaceful demonstrations at two Michigan abortion clinics over 2020 and 2021. Edl and his six co-defendants are on trial in the largest conspiracy prosecution since 9/11, with jury selection starting Tuesday at the Theodore Levin courthouse in Detroit.
Her co-defendants in the conspiracy case are Cal Zastrow, Chester Gallagher, Heather Idoni, Joel Curry, Justin Phillips, and Eva Zastrow.
The FACE Act is a Clinton law that allows for federal enforcement of the right to access abortion facilities. Edl and her co-defendants are also charged with violating this act. The conspiracy allegations could mean 10.5 years in federal prison for each, coupled with hundreds of thousands in fines.
It all dates back to a peaceful demonstration in which the group sat and stood outside of Northland Family Planning Clinic, Sterling Michigan along with some other pro life activists. Edl and Idoni also face a charge related to their appearance at pro-life demonstration outside the Women’s Health Clinic in Saginaw last year.
Edl already pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor FACE Act charge in Tennessee earlier this year, but has yet to be sentenced because of the Michigan trial.
The group prayed that the courts would “acknowledge with one voice the humanity, personhood of all preborn children” and for it to show others support and love. He also said the “DOJ had trotted out its big guns and long knives” for the trial.
