President-elect Trump has initiated diplomatic efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, urging both nations to implement an immediate ceasefire and commence negotiations. This push comes after his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris during the Notre Dame Cathedral reopening ceremony.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump emphasized the urgency of ending the conflict, which approaches its third year. “There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

The president-elect highlighted the devastating toll of the conflict, pointing to extensive casualties on both sides. He referenced Russia’s weakened position, citing the fall of the Assad regime in Syria and economic challenges as contributing factors. Trump expressed confidence in potential resolution, noting his relationship with Vladimir Putin and suggesting China’s possible role in facilitating peace.
After the Paris meeting, which included French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelensky expressed optimism about working with Trump’s incoming administration. “President Trump is, as always, resolute. I thank him. I also extend my gratitude to Emmanuel for organizing this important meeting,” he wrote on X.
About 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia's full-scale invasion began, Volodymyr Zelensky says. Zelensky further elaborated: “We all want this war to end as soon as possible and in a just way. We spoke about our people, the situation on the ground, and a just peace. We agreed to continue working together and keep in contact. Peace through strength is possible.”
Recent developments suggest potential flexibility in Ukraine’s negotiating stance. While previously insisting on complete Russian withdrawal as a precondition for talks, Zelensky has indicated openness to alternative arrangements, including a ceasefire without full withdrawal if Ukraine receives NATO protection guarantees. However, uncertainty remains regarding Moscow’s willingness to accept terms that don’t address Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.
