Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump has now thrown his hat into the ring concerning marijuana legalization in Florida – but with a twist. In a Saturday post to Truth Social, he voiced his support for the legalization of marijuana in the state.
Trump’s endorsement comes in opposition to Amendment 3, a controversial ballot initiative this November. If adopted, the amendment would let adults in Florida possess personal amounts of marijuana, joining the increasingly long list of states to do so.
“In Florida, like so many other States that have already given their approval, personal amounts of marijuana will be legalized for adults with Amendment 3,” the former president wrote, adding, “Whether people like it or not, this will happen through the approval of the Voters, so it should be done correctly. We need the State Legislature to responsibly create laws that prohibit the use of it in public spaces, so we do not smell marijuana everywhere we go, like we do in many of the Democrat run Cities.”
Trump emphasized that the state had to institute laws banning public consumption of marijuana in order not to make the state join other regions where the air space is filled with cannabis fumes. In essence, he meant to say legal does not imply free-for-all and for that, the state legislature needs to act so as to protect life quality for all Floridians.
But he didn’t stop there. He went further to make a strong case for why marijuana use can no longer be criminalized, considering among other things the heavy burden on the justice system and on taxpayers.
“We do not need to ruin lives & waste Taxpayer Dollars arresting adults with personal amounts of it on them, and no one should grieve a loved one because they died from fentanyl laced marijuana,” he stated.
Known for his hard-line stance on law and order, Trump reassured his supporters that the position does not mean he is going soft on crime. “As everyone knows, I was, and will be again, the most respected LAW & ORDER President in U.S. History,” he boasted. “We’re going to take our streets back by being tough and smart on all kinds of crime.

This fall, Floridians will have their say about Amendment 3; a 60% majority is needed for it to pass. If passed, the state would stand to financially benefit through the legalization of marijuana; it could stand to make anywhere from $200 million to $430 million a year in tax revenues.
As it stands, legislation allowing the recreational use of mairjuana has been passed in 24 states and Washington D.C.
