Lynda Carter, the iconic star of the 1970s “Wonder Woman” TV series, has made headlines by endorsing two Democratic candidates in an Arizona legislative race—despite her sister, a Republican, being one of their opponents.
“As a native Arizonan, I am proud to endorse @KelliButlerAZ and @KarenGreshamAZ for the two LD4 seats in Arizona’s State House,” the 73-year-old actress wrote in a Sept. 14 post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Kelli and Karen are both strong, experienced candidates, born and raised in Arizona. They are working mothers fighting for the rights that matter most to Arizonans, especially every child’s right to a quality education.”
Carter’s endorsement notably stands in opposition to her sister, Pamela Carter, who is running as a Republican candidate for the same district. The most prominent public disagreement between the sisters has been over the issue of abortion. Earlier this month, Arizona repealed a Civil War-era law that had severely restricted access to abortion following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. The topic has been particularly divisive in the state.
Lynda Carter, who won Miss World USA in 1972, has a history of backing Democratic politicians. She is currently supporting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential race and previously endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Pamela Carter, on the other hand, served as the state director for Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign in Arizona and is now running for one of the two seats in the state’s Fourth Legislative District. Arizona’s legislature is divided into 30 districts, each of which elects two representatives and a senator. The GOP candidate has emphasized her business experience and deep Arizona roots throughout her campaign.
“A reformer, small business owner, and lifelong Arizonan, Pamela has the skills and passions needed to fix what is broken in our state government and provide our state with excellent jobs, schools, and quality of life,” reads her campaign website.
Pamela, a gym owner and former host of the TV fitness show “Get in Shape with Pamela Carter,” has secured endorsements from various real estate trade groups and Latinos United for Conservative Action. Meanwhile, her Democratic opponents, Kelli Butler and Karen Gresham, bring their own local credentials to the race—Butler is a former state legislator who now serves on the Maricopa Community College District Board, while Gresham is president of the Madison Elementary School Board.
Pamela Carter is also facing competition from Republican Matt Gress, who currently represents the 4th District and is running for re-election. The Arizona legislature remains closely divided, with Republicans holding only a narrow majority in both chambers.
