The Department of Justice has accused a Guatemalan national residing in the United States illegally of voter fraud and identity theft after supposedly casting her votes in American elections and taking on the identity of a U.S. citizen. 

 

Alabama’s Angelica Maria Francisco, a 42-year-old resident, has been charged with illegal voting in the 2016 and 2020 general and primary elections. 

 

The department claimed that “Francisco has been charged with false claims of citizenship in connection with voting, false statements in application for a United States passport, use of a United States passport obtained by false statements, and aggravated identity theft and has agreed to plead guilty to all of the charges.” 

 

The court papers revealed that the accused acquired the identity of an American citizen in 2011, with which she subsequently acquired a U.S. passport and registration to vote. 

 

 

“She later used the United States passport to travel to and from her native country, Guatemala, in 2012, 2015, and 2018. Using that false identity, Francisco also registered to vote in Alabama in 2016 and voted in the 2016 and 2020 primary and general elections. Arizona Republican lawmakers are considering the SAVE Act, which seeks to protect federal elections against illegal immigrants voting. Democrat Senator for Arizona Mark Kelly stated that the issue “doesn’t happen” and that the Republican tax reform should be “unnecessary, irrelevant to what the challenge is.” 

 

Senator Ted Cruz has indicated that illegal immigration has the potential to disrupt elections by allowing “Democrats [to] win every election forever.” 

 

Additionally, he stated that Vice President Kamala Harris “wants the policy of illegal immigration, the politics of illegal immigration, for one reason, as a power grab for the Democrats.” Illegal immigration remains a concern that some have said could impact the most recent elections in Arizona, a battleground state.
