Former President Donald Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday, holding her responsible for the significant number of migrants living illegally in the U.S. who have been convicted or accused of homicide.

During a town hall event in Warren, Michigan, Trump, 78, referenced federal data showing that more than 15,000 illegal immigrants have been charged with or convicted of homicide. “The worst numbers I think I’ve ever heard,” Trump remarked, before targeting Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.

“It was all done by Comrade Kamala Harris,” Trump said. “Our great border czar, who’s incompetent, who’s totally incompetent.”

Although the event focused primarily on the auto industry and tariffs, Trump used the platform to also criticize Harris on immigration. This coincided with her first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border as the Democratic nominee for president.

According to data provided by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to Representative Tony Gonzales (R-TX), as of July 21, there were 662,566 noncitizens with criminal histories in ICE’s national docket. This includes 13,099 who have been convicted of homicide and 1,845 with pending homicide cases. ICE also reported that 277 migrants convicted of homicide and 51 facing such charges are currently in detention, with deportation likely.

“They were all released into our country,” Trump said. “And we can’t put up with this.”

“This is gross incompetence,” he added.

Trump’s criticism came on the same day ICE released data showing nearly 15,000 illegal immigrants have been accused or convicted of homicide.

“What a day for the border,” Trump commented, referring to Harris’ Friday visit to the border in Arizona.

During the town hall, Trump also outlined his economic vision for revitalizing the American auto industry. He proposed imposing significant tariffs on Chinese automobiles manufactured in Mexico but sold in the U.S., arguing that such measures would lead to a resurgence in American auto manufacturing.

“[Chinese automakers] think they’re going to make the cars and sell them here and close up Detroit, close up everything in this area, close up South Carolina – and it’s not going to happen, because we’re going to put very heavy tariffs on those cars coming across the border,” Trump declared. “We’re not going to let it happen.”

Near the end of the event, Trump returned to his critique of Harris, portraying her as someone “who always complains and doesn’t do anything.”

“She’s on the border today,” he said, highlighting her trip. “What a day for the border.”
