A 66-year-old man from Arizona was taken into custody by Cochise County deputies on Thursday as former President Donald Trump visited the state to discuss the ongoing crisis at the southern border. The arrest followed allegations that Ronald Lee Syrvud issued assassination threats against Trump, according to News Nation’s Ali Bradley.

Syrvud, who already had an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a sex offender, was taken into custody on a related violation charge. Authorities are now investigating the alleged threats against Trump and additional charges may follow depending on the outcome of that investigation.

Trump, the GOP nominee and clear Republican frontrunner to retake the White House in 2024, thanked the Secret Service agents who continue to stand watch over his life.

Saying that the threat on his life was not surprising to him, he added, “And the reason is because I want to do things that are very bad for the bad guys. So, I have heard, it’s very unsafe to make this trip. There were some people that really didn’t want me to make it.”

Trump also extended his gratitude to Daily Mail for letting him know about the threat, which he said law enforcement probably “wanted to keep” from him.

The former president’s stop in Arizona comes six weeks after an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally. Despite death threats, Trump charges forward in his campaign. Wednesday was his first outdoor rally since the attempted assassination, as he spoke from behind bulletproof glass that the Secret Service had put in place.

According to the Daily Mail, Syrvud has a long history of crime and even pleaded no contest to second-degree assault of a child back in 2000. He was also reportedly a registered Democrat.

This arrest underscores the ongoing risks faced by Trump as he remains a lightning rod for both support and opposition across the country.
