Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion on Friday to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) from his position over a bipartisan $1.2 trillion federal funding deal that was passed in the House on Friday to avert a government shutdown.

Greene, who voiced opposition to the spending bill, accused Johnson of betraying the confidence of the House GOP Conference in the deal.

While the motion lays the groundwork for another showdown on the House floor, the Georgia lawmaker is not forcing the vote to remove Johnson as Speaker yet. Her motion would only require action if she filed it as a “privileged resolution,” prompting the House to act on it within two legislative days.

Speaking to reporters at the Capitol, she said, “Today, I filed a motion to vacate after Speaker Johnson has betrayed our conference and broken our rules.. It’s more of a warning and a pink slip. There’s not a time limit on this, it doesn’t have to be forced… But I’m not saying that it won’t happen in two weeks, or it won’t happen.”

Blasting the $1.2 trillion spending deal as “a dream and a wish list for Democrats and for the White House,” Greene added, “I respect our conference. I paid all my dues to my conference. I’m a member in good standing and I do not wish to inflict pain on our conference. But this is basically a warning for us to go through the process, take our time, and find a new speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans in our Republican majority instead of standing with the Democrats.”

When asked when she would force a vote on the motion, Greene said she does not “have a timeline” for that, pointing out that it “will be a rolling issue that we’ll be judging and making decisions by.”

“I’m not saying that it won’t happen in two weeks, or it won’t happen in a month or who knows when, but I am saying the clock has started. It’s time for our conference to choose a new Speaker,” she stated.

In a statement to Fox News, she stated, “Speaker Johnson always listens to the concerns of members, but is focused on governing. He will continue to push conservative legislation that secures our border, strengthens our national defense, and demonstrates how we’ll grow our majority.”

Greene’s threat has been brushed off by a spokesperson for Johnson, who said that the Speaker is focused on legislating.

“Speaker Johnson always listens to the concerns of members, but is focused on governing. He will continue to push conservative legislation that secures our border, strengthens our national defense and demonstrates how we’ll grow our majority,” Raj Shah stated.
