Hollywood continues its embrace of progressive gender ideology even as mainstream America increasingly distances itself from such trends.
In a groundbreaking announcement, Entertainment Weekly reported that Karla Sofia Gascón has secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, marking the first instance of a transgender performer receiving this recognition.
Gascón earned acclaim for a performance in “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language production that NPR characterized as “the world’s first Mexican cartel musical focusing on a trans woman.” The film received substantial recognition at Cannes, where audiences responded with an extended standing ovation lasting 11 minutes, and Gascón claimed the festival’s Best Actress prize.

The narrative centers on a fictional Mexican drug cartel leader who orchestrates their own death to pursue gender transition surgery. Director Jacques Audiard contemplated splitting the role between two performers before ultimately selecting the 52-year-old Gascón.
“This just simply would not have been the same if you had had two different actors, an actor and an actress, a trans actor with a cis actress or cis actor,” Gascón told NPR. “This was an opportunity and I pushed for it because this was something that had never been done … and this was perfectly constructed.”
The entertainment industry appears committed to this progressive direction despite declining audience engagement and financial challenges. The Academy itself launched a fundraising campaign in 2024 amid falling viewership numbers, yet continues to recognize projects and performers that align with particular social perspectives.

This disconnect between Hollywood and mainstream audiences grows more apparent as public sentiment shifts away from progressive gender ideology. This cultural divide was reflected in recent political developments, including the rejection of establishment candidates in favor of more traditional perspectives.
“The movement away from ‘woke’ was already in motion even before Trump got re-elected,” one prominent producer revealed to Fox News in a discussion about Hollywood’s diminishing cultural influence.
The industry’s continued promotion of progressive ideologies through films like “Emilia Pérez” may be contributing to its growing disconnect from general audiences. As Hollywood maintains this trajectory, it risks further alienating viewers who seek more conventional entertainment options.
