Four people were killed in a school shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday out of Winder, Georgia.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said the victims were two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo as well as two math teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie.
The sheriff said the suspected shooter, another 14-year-old student, has been taken into custody.
Another nine people were wounded in the incident, which ended after a school resource officer confronted and talked the shooter into surrendering.
“Those that are deceased are heroes in my book,” Hosey said. “Those that are in the hospital recovering right now are heroes in my book. But also the heroes that we need to remember is our faculty and staff here at this school. They acted admirably, they were heroes in the action they took. The protocols of this school and system activated today prevented this from being a much larger tragedy.”
Students remembered Richard Aspinwall, who doubled as defensive coordinator for Apalachee’s football team.
“It’s just so hard to think that somebody that you spent so much time with, because this is my second year with coach, but spending so much time, like family basically,” sophomore football player Isaiah Hooks told Fox5 Atlanta. “So, turning around, knowing that he’s not going to be there.”
That included David Phenix, a teacher who had to be hospitalized after getting shot.
“We are so thankful for all the texts, calls, and messages about my dad, David Phenix. There was a shooting this morning at Apalachee High School and my dad was shot in the foot and in the hip, shattering his hip bone,” his daughter said in a Facebook post. “He arrived to the hospital alert and awake. He just got out of surgery and is stable.”
“This is everybody’s worst nightmare. I just want to offer my sincere condolences and our thoughts and prayers to the families that have lost loved ones, for those that are injured and continuing to fight,” Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp said while standing beside Hosey.
The shooter is said to have used an AR-type rifle in the assault.
Investigators said they have been following any leads regarding potential associates of the gunman. No additional shooters are believed to be at large, he said. While the FBI confirmed that it received tips about the suspected shooter last year, agents followed up on these leads and found no reason to arrest him at that point. Hosey said she believed the suspect: “will absolutely be charged with murder and as an adult.”
